Montauk, NY / The Raconteurs

June 02 ,2008

We cleaned the beach, we drank some wine and we rocked out in Montauk. It was a sick solo set to a slamming crowd at the 2nd House Tavern. Tristan Prettyman joined me on stage and she did a smooth rendition of “Son of a Preacherman”. We closed the show out with one of my favorites, “Beautiful”. Great vibes all around and big thanks to the Surfrider Foundation and Barefoot wine for having us out.

After a festive night in Montauk we headed back to NYC to catch The Raconteurs third and final night at Terminal 5 on 56thst. I had seen Jack White perform with the White Stripes at Coachella a number of years back but I had yet to see The Raconteurs. I was truly inspired by this unit of passionate and gifted musicians. Jack White is just a tremendous guitar player, vocalist and stage presence. Brendan Benson, who fronts the band with Jack, is also an amazing singer and guitar player as well. The two of them complement each other very well. The whole unit is super tight with all the harmonies, breaks, swells and syncopation right in the pocket. I was thoroughly impressed.

After the show we headed backstage and met Jack White and the rest of the fellas. I came in the room and Jack says, “Hello Mr. Cold Beverage!” It was a long time coming. Jack has such a deep appreciation of the blues. He told me he caught our set back in 1994 in Pontiac, Michigan. I was definitely honored to hear this. I grilled Jack for a quick minute about his rig and we talked about my new Gretsch G. Love Corvette. Jack plays a lot of Gretsches as well.

Now I’m en route to Boston on the 1pm regional Amtrak, watching this beautiful spring day fly by. Only three more weeks until my 10th record drops. Superhero Brother – June 24th. Check it out. Thanks! G
