Austin City Limits Wrap Up
September 30 ,2008
What a weekend. I’m flying home American Airlines service LAX-Boston. Man I’ve gotta piss so bad but the lady next to me is sleeping hard and I just don’t have the heart to wake her up so I’m typing this letter. Ahhhhhhh…this beautiful September weekend was a funky whirlwind. I flew from Boston to Austin on Thursday and after what seemed like myriad of flight cancellations. I finally arrived in the Lone Star state to play the best fest in the world, Austin City Limits. This was a big year for us as we were finally headlining our stage. I had an appointment with my vocal coach Shirley Gherson 3 days before the gig who put me on more vocal rest. I was nervous I wouldn’t make it after pushing too hard in Telluride. I shut down pretty good for three days and when I hit the stage at 7:30pm I was ready. We had our best set ever at ACL with an awesome sit-in from Slightly Stoopid on Mellow Mood. The band played great and my voice felt strong. Right before my set I jammed “Baby I like it” with SS and right after my set I ran to Donovan Frankenreiter’s last two tunes and played some harp. After the DF sit-in I caught a bike cab back to the hotee to get ready for my late night set at La Zona Rosa. I was scared my voice was blown out but I hit the stage at La Zona and felt even stronger. DF and SS joined us for jams at the late show and it was in fact a funky good time.
The next day we jetted to LAX rented a convertible and drove down the PCH to Laguna Beach for DF’s benefit. We macked out at a fancy hotel and jammed a cool mini solo set for cancer and AIDS research. Let’s find a cure! Also on the bill was my homie Matt Costa, Sugar Ray and whaaaat?? Warren G from Tha Dogg Pound–talk about an eclectic bill at The Coach House.
Sunday morning found me on the beach at Salt Creek competing in the pro/am surf contest with Rob Machado, Tim Curren, Pat O’Connel and others. I won third place again in the legends heat. Not the best not the worst. Not bad at all for a street musician from Philly. Anyways it was a killer weekend thanks to everyone who came to rock out with us. Our fans are the best!
Now- I’ve really got to excuse myself- PLH! G
